The UtilityXpert Roundup by EnergyX — January 11th

Grocery stores…healthcare…is energy next? This week in the UtilityXpert roundup, the industry is making waves about data, the possibility of Amazon invading our business and more.

Valuable new data sources for utilities (UAI)

Utilities know they need to become more data-driven. It’s becoming more and more important in a marketplace that’s increasingly unregulated. Now more than ever, utilities must utilize data to get value out of their campaigns.

Be forewarned: Becoming a data-driven utility through holistic data management practices requires a cultural shift to organization-wide cooperation that will change traditional business processes. Once set in motion, that trend is irreversible.
— John McDonald, UAI

California IOUs provide solar developers with map to grow renewables (Utility Dive)

California's largest utilities last month published ICA 2.0 to better assist renewables developers in identifying ideal locations for new projects. Renewable energy is in demand, but the interconnection process can create uncertainty. Pacific Gas & ElectricSouthern California Edison and San Diego Gas & Electric's ICA 2.0 maps are all online now.

Utility adds DR and smart home capabilities to wholesale offering (Smart Energy International)

Griddy Energy entered the utility market by connecting consumers directly to wholesale energy markets via an app. We think it’s awesome how consumers can now connect the app to smart homes using IFTTT, which really improves the customer experience.

There’s a massive movement to use data to inform our day-to-day behaviors – think about how Waze, Uber, and even Fitbit have used technology to improve our decisions in transportation on a daily basis. We’re excited to continue that trend in the retail electricity market.

— Greg Craig, CEO at Griddy Energy

Amazon just broke into health care. Is energy next? (OZY)

Is Amazon headed for utilities next? We never saw it coming when they gobbled up Whole Foods; perhaps energy consumption is Mr. Bezos’ next play.

It’s interesting to think about what Amazon is doing for health care. It’s a slow-moving, very regulated sector and they’re thinking about how to improve it. There are a lot of parallels between health care and utility.

Navigant Names Top Players in Competitive Energy Storage Market (Energy Manager Today)

Navigant has always produced quality reports, but we love the point that utilities need to move past project development and move towards integrated solutions. We couldn’t agree more that silos within an organization kill utility success.
